Emirates unveiled a new premium economy seat on Thursday, introducing a unique privacy screen that extends to the full height of the seat. This innovation, along with electric controls for reclining and raising the leg rest, aims to enhance passenger comfort and privacy. The seat also features a cradle position to prevent interference with passengers behind.
While Japan Airlines was the first to introduce electric controls in premium economy, Emirates' new seat also uses them to manage the privacy divider. This follows a trend where wealthy travelers have grown accustomed to privacy features, first introduced in Emirates' first-class suites in 2003. Previously, premium economy passengers had limited privacy, often relying on small headrest panels.
United Airlines introduced a divider in its Premium Plus cabin last year, but it did not extend to the full height of the seat. Emirates' new seat includes the U-Dream headrest, which supports the neck fully, eliminating the need for neck pillows. Business Insider tested the headrest at the Farnborough Airshow and found it transformative for sleep.
The seats also include wireless charging and a 4K screen, with a tray table and integrated phone holder for added convenience. Emirates did not specify when the new seat will debut, but it will be available on newly delivered Airbus A350 airplanes, featuring 28 premium economy seats in a 2-3-2 configuration. The seats are 20 inches wide with a pitch of 39 inches.
Emirates first added premium economy to its flagship Airbus A380 in early 2021, and the cabin has gained popularity since the pandemic, as travelers seek more luxury. The new feature bridges the gap between premium economy and business class, catering to those willing to pay extra for enhanced comfort.
